Mantle Transition Zone Receiver Functions for Bermuda: Automation, Quality Control, and Interpretation

چکیده

Abstract The origin of the Bermuda rise remains ambiguous, despite, or perhaps because of, existence sometimes incongruous seismic wave‐speed and discontinuity models in sub‐Bermudian mantle. Hence, whether is surface manifestation a mantle plume question. Using largest data set records from to date, we estimate radial receiver functions at Global Seismographic Network station BBSR multiple frequency bands, using iterative time‐domain deconvolution. Motivated by synthetic experiments axisymmetric spectral‐element forward waveform modeling, devise quality metric for our aid automation reproduction transition zone studies. We interpret complex signals observe considering mineralogical controls on structure, conclude that results are likely be indicative thicker than average zone. Our result incompatible with canonical model whole an olivine dominated mantle; however, considerations phase transitions garnet system would allow us reconcile observations possible presence through‐going hot thermal anomaly beneath Bermuda.

Spin transition zone in Earth's lower mantle.

Mineral properties in Earth's lower mantle are affected by iron electronic states, but representative pressures and temperatures have not yet been probed. Spin states of iron in lower-mantle ferropericlase have been measured up to 95 gigapascals and 2000 kelvin with x-ray emission in a laser-heated diamond cell. A gradual spin transition of iron occurs over a pressure-temperature range extendin...

Crust and upper mantle of Kamchatka from teleseismic receiver functions

Teleseismic receiver functions (RFs) from a yearlong broadband seismological experiment in Kamchatka reveal regional variations in the Moho, anisotropy in the supra-slab mantle wedge, and, along the eastern coast, Ps converted phases from the steeply dipping slab. We analyze both radialand transverse-component RFs in bin-averaged epicentral and backazimuthal sweeps, in order to detect Ps moveou...

Topography of the Mantle Transition Zone Discontinuities Beneath Alaska and Its Geodynamic Implications: Constraints From Receiver Function Stacking

The 410 and 660 km discontinuities (d410 and d660, respectively) beneath Alaska and adjacent areas are imaged by stacking 75,296 radial receiver functions recorded by 438 broadband seismic stations with up to 30 years of recording period. When the 1-D IASP91 Earth model is used for moveout correction and time depth conversion, significant and spatially systematic variations in the apparent dept...
